RRFC Match Report Oct 3rd

3rd division score was 22-7 for Richmond over Chilliwack. Try scorers were Pat Lanigan,
Doug Embury, and John Stein, conversions were kicked by Issac McKittrick. The 2nd division team had a plethora of youth with a sprinkling of age and experience. From the outset, newly transformed #8, John Findlay took control of the game with long distance runs resulting in a try for him and a support try for Brendan Bains. The onslaught continued as Findlay notched another try while breaking through the Brit-Lions defense. Quick ball movement and Richmond’s ability to keep the ball off the deck in contact led to it’s fourth try in 20 minutes as Shawn Murray, from his wing position was able to outpace the defenders and score. Richmond was up 22-0. Then disaster struck, #10 Jay Lee separated his shoulder in a tackle. The ensuing reorganization caused havoc as players were moved about to realign the backline. That along with the scoring onslaught of the first 20 minutes allowed some defensive and offensive complacency. Like last years loss to the Brits, Richmond let them back into the match. Scoring 26 unanswered points the Brits left the Richmond squad stunned and fearing a week of tackling practice.

Fortunately for Richmond, due to a couple of minor injuries, Findlay was moved back into his #12 role for the last 20 minutes of the game. With a stabilizing presence at inside centre, the Richmond squad picked up their bootstraps and with a effort that rivaled the first 20 minutes, were able to score 21 points in the last frame of the game. 2 Scores from Shawn Murray and one from Graham Haigh rounded out the scoring. Ryan Shams kick the converts for the last three tries.

After going 3-0 in their first three games Richmond’s 1st XV got an abrupt dose of reality. The game started off well for Richmond. They put pressure on the Brit defense for the first 10 minutes. The unfortunate part is that they were only able to come up with 3 points for their effort. It went quickly downhill from that point on. Spotty tackling and poor decision making was the order of the rest of the day for Richmond. Add to that a predictable offensive attack that ran more sideways than forward it proved to be a long day for the 1st XV. Overlaps by the Brits, tactical kicking, and the inability to corral their # 15 were keys to the final score, favoring the visitors 43-3.

This week all divisions have a bye on October 10th.
